Klein Constantia Estate produces an array of varietally labelled premium wines: Sauvignon Blanc (including the reserve Perdeblokke), Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, and small quanities of Semillon, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. Blends include flagship red Marlbrook and new flagship white Mme Marlbrook. Probably our most famous and admired wine is the Vin de Constance, a re-creation of the legendary sweet Constantia.

Reflecting on our future in the global market-place has led us to develop a new, second tier of red wines, blended in a more modern and approachable style, though not at the cost of elegance, using fruit from both the home farm and Anwilka, Klein Constantia’s exciting new Helderberg property.

Vin de Constance

The re-creation of the famous Constantia wine made in the 18th and 19th centuries, and presented in a replica of the original half-litre bottle.
Made from raisined muscat de frontignan grapes, believed to be the same clone that was originally planted in Constantia.

A deep golden natural (unfortified) sweet wine, Vin de Constance is matured for two years in French oak.

It is released almost 5 years after the vintage.

Chardonnay

Made in a lightly wooded style, this wine is a blend of barrel-fermented and tank-fermented chardonnay.

Partial malolactic fermentation in the barrel-fermented component of the blend lends complexity, whilst the tank-fermented portion allows the wine to express the Klein Constantia hallmarks of racy acidity and mineral flavours.

Lees ageing for both components imparts freshness, and provides body to the palate.

Noble Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc

Some vintages provide us with the ideal climatic conditions for the development of noble rot, where we are able to produce small quantities of botrytised sauvignon blanc. Fermentation and ageing in new French oak produces wines of exquisite colour and richness.

Marlbrook

Vines grown on the Marlbrook title of the estate, named in the 18th century after John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough (known as Marlbrook in Europe) contribute to this classic, complex blend of 50% cabernet sauvignon, 40% merlot and 10% cabernet franc which is matured in French oak for up to two years.

Real Riesling

Made for years in a semi-sweet style, we have recently ventured to a drier style to showcase the flinty character and vivid fruit of this noble German variety.

The packaging has also been modernised, and our riesling now comes in a striking, tall bottle, with a screwcap closure.

Shiraz

Because of the coolness of the Constantia region, our shiraz tends more towards the style of the Rhône than the Barossa. Exhibiting white pepper spice, bright redcurrant fruit and violet florality, these are powerful wines made to be drunk with hearty dishes.

Sauvignon Blanc

Since the maiden 1986 vintage, Klein Constantia’s sauvignon blanc has received many local and international awards, with the estate being regarded as one of the leading sauvignon blanc producers in the Cape.

Fermented cool in stainless steel to preserve the primary fruit aromas and flavours, the wine is not oaked. A number of vintages are regarded for their unusual longevity, with the ideally cellared maiden vintage still showing well!

KC Cabernet Merlot

Forward-thinking strategies have led to the establishment of a second tier for our red wines. This allows us to elevate the quality and status of our premium range by reserving the very best parcels of vineyard for the Marlbrook and Klein Constantia Cabernet Sauvignon.

The KC range is a blend of Constantia and Stellenbosch (Helderberg) fruit, offering earlier drinking enjoyment and excellent value.

Mme Marlbrook

To mark the estate’s anniversary, a delicate yet powerful blend of classic Constantia white varieties, complementing the more masculine Marlbrook, has been introduced to pay tribute to Churchill’s wife Sarah, 1st Duchess of Marlborough.

Pinot Noir

Our high-altitude pinot vineyard produces a fresh, lively, bright style. Open top fermentation with manual punch downs every 4 hours ensure maximum extraction of colour and fruit before the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in burgundian 228-litre pieces. Further ageing takes place in these barrels for no more than 9 months, in order to preserve the freshness of the fruit.

Perdeblokke

Launched on our 25th anniversary, this reserve label captures the intense concentration of flavours of the south-facing, low-yielding perdeblok vineyard, 220m above sea level.

The name recalls the time (still remembered by Klein Constantia vineyard workers) when patient Percheron draught horses were used to plough the sauvignon blanc vineyards high on the steep slopes of Constantiaberg.
