We’re #SeriousAboutSauvignon

7 May, 2021

To culminate with International Sauvignon Blanc day earlier this month, the Constantia Wine Route launched a varietal-based wine route, the Sauvignon Blanc Route. The brand new Constantia Sauvignon Blanc Route will be available at six estates across the Constantia Wine Route. In celebration of this, we have added a special SAUVIGNON BLANC TASTING to our wine tasting offerings. For R50pp, enjoy a curated tasting featuring our newly released 2020 Sauvignon Blanc as well as our 2017 vintage from MAGNUM.

Winemaker at Klein Constantia, Matthew Day, comments: “In the pursuit of elegance we strive to create a Sauvignon Blanc that is unique and represents our region. By doing this we create a serious style that respects the fact that Sauvignon Blanc is a noble cultivar.”

TIM ATKIN’S SA REPORT FOR 2020

15 September, 2020

Leading UK wine writer Tim Atkin MW, has released his latest in-depth South African report. His annual report, now in its eighth year and available on timatkin.com, is highly regarded as one of the most detailed overviews of South African wine.

Our Vin de Constance 2017 scored 98 points taking the title of ‘Sweet Wine of The Year’.

““Lighter and lighter” is the motto at Klein Constantia these days, according to Matt Day. The latest, world-class release of Vin de Constance certainly doesn’t lack sweetness at 165 grams or even concentration, but it has a freshness that’s reminiscent of Vouvray or Barsac. Subtly wooded in 50% new barrels, it unfurls layers of citrus, toast and tarte tatin, with a drizzle of honey and vivid acidity and palate length. Bravo!”

The 2019 vintage of Cuvee Anabel scored in the top scoring Roses for the year!

“”A super smart rosé” is the aim here, according to Matt Day, very much in a Côtes de Provence style. The blend is secret for some reason, but this is a fresh, floral, redcurrant and rosehip style with lots of racy minerality.”

We couldn’t be prouder.

MORE ABOUT VIN DE CONSTANCE 2017…

The approach used to create Vin de Constance is unique to Klein Constantia, tailored from historic information used to make the iconic sweet wines of Constantia in the 1700s. From these records, we have recreated a style of Muscat de Frontignan involving numerous winemaking techniques in order to create the perfect sweet wine. One of the most important aspects is to achieve balance, to do this we harvested the grapes in numerous batches over a 2 month period. Each batch has a precise purpose and is meticulously blended together on numerous occasions to achieve a perfect balance between sugar, alcohol and acidity. After an extended fermentation period, the wine was aged for 3 years in a combination of 50% new oak and acacia barrels, as well as large format foudres before further blending and bottling.

MORE ACCOLADES FOR VIN DE CONSTANCE

12 November, 2019

Earlier this month our acclaimed Vin de Constance 2015 received two top marks both locally and internationally – receiving 94 points from esteemed Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate & the much-coveted 5 stars from the Platter’s Guide SA.

Anthony Mueller, from Robert Parker, reviewed the 2015 vintage: “Wow, this is delicate with generous floral tones and is really delicious. The grapes were harvested in different tries to select fresher berries earlier at the beginning of the harvest in order to maintain acidity levels in the wine, while other berries were harvested later in the season to increase sweetness. This wine captures the essence of Vin de Constance…”
