KC on the Green Wine Route Map

Posted on 16 Aug 2016

Did you know we are the only winery in Constantia on the WWF South Africa Green Wine Route map? As a BWI champion we are thrilled to be apart of this great initiative.

If you were to visit the winelands today, it would not be unusual to find ducks and geese foraging for snails, horse-drawn ploughs working the land, more indigenous than alien plant life, and farms with conservation educational programmes.

No matter your taste in wine, whether you prefer a crisp Sauvignon or a spicy, full-bodied Shiraz, if you care about the environment, you’ll be interested in these ‘green’ wines and the producers that go the extra mile to farm for the future.

The Biodiversity & Wine Initiative was a partnership between the conservation sector and the wine industry that aimed to minimise the loss of threatened natural habitat and contribute to sustainable wine production. After ten years of broad industry uptake and successful implementation of this initiative, the partnership is now been refocused to drive and reward industry best practice, under the new name of WWF Conservation Champions. Previous BWI members (entry level) can in future make use of the Sustainable Wines of South Africa seal to promote their compliance of minimum environmental criteria. Producers that are able to meet rigorous best practice criteria to continual improvement and biodiversity conservation can become recognised as Conservation Champions. They are recognised through the use of a striking label depicting a sugar bird and protea.
