Klein Constantia takes top scores with James Suckling

Posted on 11 Aug 2017

We are thrilled to announce our recent scores from James Suckling. Only 3 SA wines received 95 points – two of them were from Klein Constantia & Anwilka – Vin de Constance 2013 & Anwilka 2015!

James Suckling recently set up a tasting with various SA producers in Hong Kong at the WOSA trade tasting. Admitting that ‘South Africa wines are turning a corner’, Suckling said that ‘that the country is approaching new horizons.’ More than 100 wines were rated 90 points or more, including varietals from Riesling to Barbera.

In conversation with Suckling, our MD Hans Astrom said “There is a huge push to identify and express the uniqueness of different appellations by focusing on varietals that work in certain areas rather than just making what is trending at that point in time. We are moving away from an old South African style and mentality by moving towards an ‘out of the box’ thinking group of wineries and winemakers.”

On tasting the Anwilka 2015, Suckling has the following to say: “This is really a phenomenal South African wine for the money showing such delicacy yet also power.”

Overall, it’s more than evident South Africa is rediscovering its identity as a serious producer of quality wines according to Suckling. More will be revealed when he makes his way to our shores next year to visit various estates. To read the full article click here
