Klein Constania

Cabernet Sauvignon 2001

Cabernet Sauvignon 2001

Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are grown on the warm, lower north-facing slopes of the Klein Constantia vineyards at 70-100m above sea level.

Vines benefit from prevailing cool southerly sea breezes during the summer, which lengthens the ripening period. Soils consist of decomposed Table Mountain granite and are not irrigated. Grapes were harvested in March of this warm and relatively dry growing season. The must was fermented in rototanks at 26-30’C, with 6 hourly rotation ensuring optimum extraction of colour and tannins.

Tasting Notes

Medium to deep ruby in colour, with pure blackcurrant aromas and a hint of the hallmark mintiness apparent in most vintages. Rich red berry fruit on the palate is balanced by ripe, structured tannins which carry the wine through to a savoury finish.

Approachable now, but will soften and develop further with another year in bottle. Will keep 8 years.

Barrel Aging

After malolactic fermentation, the wine was matured in new 225L French oak barrels for 24 months
