Klein Constania

Chardonnay 1997

Chardonnay 1997

Grown on the higher, cooler south-facing slopes of Klein Constantia Estate overlooking False Bay.

A cool summer led to a normal crop of 7 tons per hectare averaging 23 degrees balling being harvested in mid-March which was three weeks later than usual. After destalking and crushing, the wine was barrel fermented and then matured in half new and half one-year old French oak barrels for six months. During this time it underwent malolactic fermentation.

Tasting Notes

Mid-yellow. Toasty, with a malolactic character and smoky, honeyed aromas. Developed flavours creamy, butterscotch, leesy. Good flavour profile.

Maturation

We recommend the wine for drinking now, but believe it will improve with another three years in the bottle.
