Klein Constania

Chardonnay 1998

Chardonnay 1998

Grown on the higher, cooler south-facing slopes of Klein Constantia Estate overlooking False Bay.

A warm, dry summer led to a smaller than normal crop of 5 tons per hectare, averaging 24º balling, being harvested in late February. After destalking and crushing, the wine was fermented to dryness and then matured for six months in the same 500 litre French oak barrels. During this time it spontaneously underwent malolactic fermentation.

Tasting Notes

Clear, bright, pale straw. Subtle wood with wafts of vanilla and grapefruit. Fresh, crisp with citrus flavours developing on the palate. Carefully balanced with integrated wood and fruit. Will develop richness with bottle maturation.

We recommend the wine for drinking now, but believe it will improve with another three years in the bottle.
