Klein Constania

Chardonnay 2001

Chardonnay 2001

Grown on the high, cooler south-facing slopes of the Klein Constantia vineyards at 250m above sea level. Atlantic and Indian Ocean sea breezes ensure ideal, slow ripening. Soils consist of decomposed Table Mountain granite and are not irrigated.

Grapes were hand-harvested in late February of this warm, dry, low-yielding vintage. Fermentation was initiated in tanks and completed in barrel. Spontaneous, full malolactic fermentation ensued.

Tasting Notes

Pale yellow-gold in colour. Fragrant, complex nose of citrus, oatmeal and marzipan. A supple wine, with a rich mouthfeel and well-integrated oak. Long, lime-flavoured finish. Although the wine is ready to drink now, it will keep and improve in bottle a further 3 years

We recommend the wine for drinking now, but believe it will improve with another three years in the bottle.

Barrel Aging

Matured in 500l Burgundian barrels (30% new) for 10 months.
