Klein Constania

Riesling 2001

Riesling 2001

Riesling is grown on the cool, south-facing slopes of Klein Constantia Estate. Prevailing southerly Atlantic and Indian Ocean breezes ensure a relatively long and cool growing season, ideal for this variety.

Late season dew and humidity encourages the development of some botrytis. Unirrigated soils consist of decomposed Table Mountain granite.
Grapes were harvested in late-February of this warm vintage. Approximately 20% of the fruit was affected by botrytis. This will enhance the character and complexity of this wine with age. Cool fermentation in stainless steel vats followed. The wine was bottled 6 months after harvest.

Tasting Notes

Made in an off-dry and fuller-bodied than usual style, this wine shows intense lychee and floral aromas. Pronounced flavours of pineapple, grapefruit and confectionery are balanced by good acidity, leading to a spicy, dry finish. (Honeyed botrytis and terpene characteristics are not yet evident, but should begin to show after another year in bottle.)

Ready to drink now, but will evolve well in bottle for a further 3-4 years.
