Klein Constania

Shiraz 2000

Shiraz 2000

Grown on the low and warmer North-facing slopes (70 m above sea level).

Grapes were hand-harvested at full ripeness in mid-March of this warm vintage. Yields were low, at 6 tons per hectare, for optimal fruit concentration. Fermentation took place in rototanks at 26-30 degrees Celsius, with regular rotation ensuring maximum extraction of colour, tannins and flavours.

Tasting Notes

Deep intensity ruby in colour. This wine is characteristically smoky, savoury and spicy, with an attractive earthiness. Flavours of dark berry fruit, black pepper and cloves are evident on the palate, followed by a long, firm finish. A bit more time in bottle would be ideal, in order to soften the tight-grained, though ripe, tannins.

Maturation

Ideally, give a little more time, broaching in 2003. Will evolve in bottle until 2006 & 2008.

Barrel Aging

The wine was then matured in 50% new 225l American oak barrels.
