FAQs
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the difference between Klein Constantia & Groot Contantia?
Klein Constantia and Groot Constantia share a historic link: both were once part of the vast Constantia estate founded by Simon van der Stel in 1685. Over time, the land was divided, and today each farm operates independently with its own vineyards, philosophy, and wines. Klein Constantia is renowned for its cool-climate terroir on the upper slopes of Constantiaberg and for producing the iconic Vin de Constance.
Is Klein Constantia the oldest farm in South Africa?
Klein Constantia is one of the oldest wine estates in South Africa. The Constantia estate, from which Klein Constantia originates, was established in 1685 by Simon van der Stel, making it the birthplace of South African wine heritage. While there are other historic farms, Klein Constantia carries the legacy of being part of the first wine farm in the country.
Is Vin de Constance the wine that Napoleon drank when he was in exile?
Yes. Historical records show that Napoleon Bonaparte, during his exile on Saint Helena, regularly requested Vin de Constance. This legendary sweet wine was also celebrated by European royalty and literary figures such as Charles Dickens and Jane Austen, adding to its mythical status.
